Yes, all of the above plus custom engine mounts. It sounds like a lot of screwing around for a tired old 18R-C, surely the end results wouldn't be that quick.
If your friend is looking for a decent upgrade, a 3T from a T18 might be a better option. I'm pretty sure this will be a bolt-in job for an 83 Corolla if you grab a T18 crossmember from the wreckers. If you get the transmission and tailshaft from a T18 that should bolt in as well. Much easier, and it should go a lot better than the original engine.
