Not totally true. Generally 6*9's are used when you don't have a sub, as due to the cone area, they can play a little lower than most speakers. If you have a sub there is no need for the 6*9's to play low and it can also cause cancellation issues. If you want to keep them, it would be best to high pass them with a cap, or external crossover.

Splits would be the best option, however a good set of 4 inch coax or splits will probably suffice. Perhaps run them off a small 2x50 RMS amp. If you are into SQ, you will have a spectral gap, but otherwise it should work fine
