I've actually been bitten by this in the last few days  but hey...
I live in Melbourne, was going to Adelaide on sunday, about 200km from adelaide my 4ag turbo got a case of 'vented block disease' (a rod through the block). It was using an RB25DET turbo, fabricated cooler, etc. However, I'd almost certain this was due to a lack of fuel rather than a physical limit of the engine itself. I never heard any detonation, POSSIBLY due to the fact it was running on LPG. I'll let you know when I pull the engine apart as to the reason it died. However, I can say that the RB25 turbo is a great thing on this engine, giving acceptable response and reasonable higher RPM grunt. Not perfect, but for a $200 turbo that was in good order, who could argue!
Only thing I can say is TUNE IT VERY VERY CAREFULLY! No matter how many times I've said this to other people, I now look like the biggest fool of all for killing my engine that way. At least a replacement engine was easy to find and didn't break the bank
