When my 18R-GEU ECU wasn't earthed properly the injectors would stop pulsing and stay 100% open, which obviously made the engine run incredibly rich and stall.

How the hell did you come to that conclusion and fix it?

I knew the injectors were opening because the car reeked of fuel as soon as you switched the ignition on, so I knew there was a wiring problem somewhere. Much probing with multimeters eventually led me to the conclusion that there was too much resistance between the ECU body and the chassis; I clamped a jumper lead to the ECU, and the other end to the engine block, and hey presto it started!
