Hi Pete

You do have a couple of options, but unfortunately Toyota seems to specialise in transverse-mount four cylinders and inline sixes.

Your best options are a 3SGE or 3SGTE or (as Nark suggested) a 1GGTE. Unfortunately neither of these are straightforward like the swaps you are no doubt accustomed to.

While the 3SGE (two lite four) and 3sgte (two litre turbo four) were both available in RWD they were essentially a FWD layout whacked in the rear of the car to create a RWD midmount setup.

As such they are both relatively difficult to convert to RWD, but having a motor from the same family (yours is a 2SC) will help as a number of the parts (eg gearbox) will bolt straight up. There are still a number of issues involving modifications to coolant outlets and exhaust manifolds - with a search there should be some great resources on this site about "3SGTE to RWD".

The 1GGTE (inline six cylinder twin turbo) is a more straightforward swap in that all you really need to do is fabricate some custom engine mounts after positioning the engine between the radiator & firewall! The main headache with this one will be clearance on the exhaust side (due to the twin turbo setup) and a tight squeeze lengthwise.

Each of these engines involves a custom wiring job and the obligatory EFI conversion - for the turbo engines you will also need an intercooler piped in at the front too so factor in an extra $1000 for this at least.

There are other engines you may use but they are even harder than the above, and I wouldnt' recommend these as a first-time swap.
