Check this out. The bearings were fine etc (Car has done 295k). All that were needed were new brushes. Symptoms involved charge lights on dash etc. Battery went dead quickly if parkers left on etc .

Find a good local auto electricaian which can supply the individual parts, you may find the brushes are all you have to worry about, the auto elec had them already in the brush holder as a swap over deal, if more is worongwith it then clubagreenies sources of about $150 for new may be worth calling upon, or ring around

If it is a voltage regulator, then you can probably rip one of one in a pcik a part
