mrshin pretty much covered it, I learnt the hard way when I had to buy a second sprinter when the first one rusted out. Here is what I did:

Apart from the lower part of the front gaurds there are not many places to rust up front. Firstly check along the top of the windscreen as this is a common spot for rust to start. Be wary of even small amounts up there cause it can be just the tip of the iceburg, and will be expensive if not impossible to fix. Open the drivers door and check down in the A pillars around the hinges, any rust spots there will be pretty much terminal. Have a peek inside the guards as leaves and stuff tends to collect in there. Follow around the bottom sill, the metal in those places is thin and tends to rust easily. Then check around the door latch area, where the vent is - it is an extremely common place for them to rust.

Next check around and under the rear wheel arch, especially where the rear bumper bolts up, and open the fuel hatch and check inside and underneath near the bumper. Another common spot for rust.

At the back of that car, your greatest fear should be what you cant see - under the bumper there is a "sill" which runs along the width of the car and tends to collects water and rust. It then spreads to the corners and starts to pop up where the small seams run up to the taillights. Follow those seams down as far as you can and look for signs of rust there. These seams can be a good telltale indicator of any repairs done to the rear as they are hard to reproduce in filler Smile.

Look around the back of the tailgate, both inside and outside. Also check the around the tailgate hinges and the strut mounts. Next pull up the carpet and check the floor for rust, pull out the rear tire and check for rust at the bottom of the tire well. Open the lid that to the jack area and stick your hand in and feel all the way down for rust - it should be nice and dry in there. Do the same on the other side.

Then continue around the passenger side of the car, doing exactly the same as the drivers side only in reverse.

hope this helps.
