Head gaskets tend to blow between cylinders. The simplest way is to do a compression test.

You can loose water into the cylinder(s). I have seen this on a falcon 6cyl motor.

You can expect bubbles in the coolant once the engine warms up (thermostat opened) as the water is circulating through out the engine.

If water gets into the oil, the oil will generally go a milky colour. If the engine has sat for a long time, only then will the oil and water separate to an extent that both are visible on the dip stick.
