Easiest way to tell the age of an engine is to check the dates on the plug leads, or any of the wires in the loom They should have a year date printed on them.

There are also plenty of sites out there which describe the differences between each generation of 4a. Try techdocs here and club4ag for a start. From memory both AE92 and AE101 had smallport, so that doesn't narrow it down.
