After 9 months of fun, my 1G-GTE has let go of a big end bearing. (I think a day at Wakefield may have helped ) I got a quote from Toyota for replacement bearings (they do have some in stock) and they want $40 plus tax each. This is roughly 4 times what they would cost for any other make of car. I can't see the point of pulling the sump off and only doing one bearing, so a set will cost me close to $300. Question 1. Does anyone know if non-genuine big end bearings are locally available for these engines. Question 2. Has anyone tried to take a sump off without removing the engine. I am hopeing that I can just undo the gearbox crossmember and undo the engine mounts. I should then be able to lift/tilt the engine enough to take the sump off. I am using a RA crossmember.
