I'd say it won't really matter starting from a 2 litre or 1.6 litre van- except the exhaust will be on the correct side in a 1.6 litre escort, the 2 litre has it on the right hand side of the engine so you'd need to change the exhaust, make mounts etc. I'd say the 4age will be compact enough not to need radiator relocation or anything, but will definitely need custom engine mounts, and I'd look at a bigger radiator maybe. I'd also suggest that there will probably not be enough room for the gearbox in a manual escort's trans tunnel, so find an auto to start from to lessen the fab (bigger tunnel-you'll just need the manual car's pedal box), or alter the trans tunnel to suit.I have no idea whether the gear lever will be in the right spot with the sprinter 5 speed.You may also have to go from cable to hydraulic for the clutch? I don't know on that one. You'll need a surge tank and return line,and bigger fuel pump, basically a whole new fuel system.
I've never heard of it being done, but I reckon it would be one of the easier conversions out there, I think a 4age would have to be roughly similar in size to a ford pushrod 1600.
Now the 20v will mean heaps of trouble, you'll have to change the ignition system fundamentally or make a big hole in the firewall for the distributor. I'd go with the 86kw rwd engine for ease of fitment (not moving coolant lines, new sump etc).
Thats just a few guesses, I rreckon there would be more to it than that though.
