If you get the right equipment and take your time, there's no reason why you can't do it yourself. However, for a one-off, it's fairly expensive. ie. (for acrylic) decent compressor $6-800 (plus water traps etc) decent spray gun $150 etch primer $50 surfacer $50 paint $170-260 depending on metallics/pearls clear coat $70 cutting compound $30 polishes $70 So it's still going to cost at least $1000 unless you can borrow a compressor. However, second time around, it's VERY cheap. Also, I just painted the ENTIRE car, inside and out for that price (a shop quoted me around $4500). It does take a lot longer, but the finish can be as good if you do it well. If you're painting acrylic, if you stuff up, the solution is just some sandpaper away. But be prepared that the prep takes a hell of a lot longer than you would imagine. All up, I think it's taken me about 2 months of weekends to get to where I am now, but the result is very shiny and looks great. [Report message to a moderator]
