Hi, this thing looks familiar.
We've pulled one of these apart before and yes, they are a bimetallic air bleed valve.
They work just as described by Jonny.
These carbies should always be tuned (idle) when they are hot, hence, when this valve is operational (if it is linked up)
There are problems associated with these things though.
1. They allow unfiltered air to enter the engine (small particles are likely to enter)
2. They don't always work. The one that we had (before we modified it) didn't shut off when the engine was cold.
Implications: if tuned when hot (valve open), the engine runs like shit when the engine is cold (faulty valve is still open)
What we did:
We sourced a set of the older style carbies, soldered this valve shut and used it as a vacuum plug so that all vacuum points on the balance tube looked original to get the conversion past motor reg.
Suggestions:
1. Test it to make sure it works.
2. If it works, then set it up with its vacuum line so that it is operational, then retune the engine while it is hot.
THis may fix some richness probles during driving.
Also put a piece of filtering foam in it somehow so that shit doesn't get into the engine through the hole in the top.
It may help als oto screw it into its mounting so that it doesn't swing around, and gasket goo the bugger in, ours is always coming loose.
