The dwell angle is of how long the points are open for. So that the coil can recharge for when it fires one of the spark plugs. If the points stay closed (short dwell angle) for to long the coil wont be able to store enough energy for a clean ignition. The same more-or-less applies to if the points stay open (extended dwell) for too long. The coil wont be able to fire the full charge in time. [Report message to a moderator]
