I have not modifyed my handbrake at all, but have the habit of holding the button in when using it during my journey. And I manual release the brake with the button in before letting go of it. This way the brake does not lock on. If you just remove the spring, who is to say the ratchet will never work and lock on when it wants too? Even if you remove the spring, I would still be holding that button in to make sure it doesn't lock. Once you end your journey and park the car, i don't think the brake would ever slip off by itself. The spring is not holding it on.
