i don't have an 18R-G, and have no hope in hell of getting one, certainly not as cheap as a 22r anyway.

Cheap and proper often don't go together. I think a 2T-G for your TA22 would be relatively 'cheap', if even that is too expensive maybe you should consider not playing with the TA22 at all?
