putting any engine which has the exhaust manifold on the passanger side into an escort is going to be painfull due to the shocking positioning of the brake booster/master cylinder.

Jeez, didn't seem to be much of a problem when ford designed and built all the kent engined the escorts that way!!!So as I said it would be much simpler to start with a 1.6 litre engined van, as the exhaust is on the pasenger side unlike the 2 litre one. The brake master cylinder/booster is on the DRIVER'S SIDE, but I'd almost guarantee you'd want to change that setup (in the 1.6 van it is remote mounted with a long linkage at the front of the engine bay-is a pain in the arse if fitting twin sidedraughts to an escy 1.6)anyway, as standard 1.6 escort brakes were barely adequate with a mildly modded (e.g say 70hp) 1600 ford. So a bigger booster and master cylinder and bigger front disks and decent calipers would be the go, and you could probably get a fairly compact one with remote fluid reservoir which would help. Basically if you upgrade the brakes, you would be junking the escort m/c and booster as a matter of course.
