I assume it'll reduce the strength of the tunel, but I've never heard of someone busting a transmission tunnel, so am I right in assuming that it shouldn't produce any problems?

The transmission tunnel is an important structural feature of your car - it's not just there to house the transmission. It adds strength to the floorpan in the same way that corrugated iron is stronger than a flat sheet of metal (ie resists bending/twisting). Compromising the strength of your transmission tunnel is not a wise idea IMO.
