As said earlier it could be a unit that uses the points to trigger it and gives a transister output to coil. If there is no load on points they will last a long time. There shouldn't be a resistor in the cicuit with electronic ignition. I think the gt40 coil is a 12v job and it will only be getting around 7v with the resistor. Hope that helps.
