Well the only way the crank shaft interacts with the externals of the engine is with the bolting on of the flywheel and the crank pulley.

The flywheel will work for either car as they use essentially the same gearbox. The crank pulley is different between the two but can be swaped easily enough.

I'd advise going back and getting a better explanation and if he can't give one then I'd be looking for a better mechanic.
