voltage and audio crackles

Hi guys,
Well my car finally appears to be fixed, it was a regulator issue... It wasn't giving the battery enough juice on idle to recharge, so the spark got worse and worse in heavy traffic. But now i have a new problem - my stereo crackles. I know a bit about electronics but nothing about car audio so hopefully someone can help.
Given that the only change has been an increased output voltage at the regulator i'm guessing it's one of a couple things: 1) stereo needs more regulated voltage and a quick fix might be adding a fat resistor before the power input, 2) stereo was working better (!) when the new regulator was first installed and the speakers blew after an hour or two, 3) something isn't grounded that should be. Where do i start checking all this stuff? Am i going to need to pull the whole dashboard off to get to the back of the stereo to check voltages? How do i check speakers? This is a cheap-ish aftermarket stereo someone installed in my RA40 before i bought the car.
Thanks
