Hiyas
This is very simple but it's the kind of thing you sometimes may not think of so I thought I'd share while I'm bored. I am getting a car ready for RWC and realised the engine bay was filthy. While it's not a mechanical PROBLEM as such, everything looking a bit dirty and grimy certainly won't help one's chances.
I've often wondered how to clean an engine bay without huge difficulty... for RWC or otherwise. When looking for a bucket in the shed today I stumbled across it - a paintbrush!
Just got some normal car wash mixed with water... wet down one side of the engine bay to soften any dirt, and gave the whole area a squirt with that fab $2 degreaser. Then, dipped the (fairly soft) paintbrush in the bucket of soapy water and firmly brushed down the engine bay... the crap all just came off and it was really simple to get into the parts I thought would be very hard to reach. You can just use the paintbrush and an extra spray of degreaser to 'dab' at any stubborn bits.
Poured some more water over to rinse off the crap and then did another run to be safe... came up looking a treat! Unfortunately my digital camera is on the blink, but luckily I found some before and after pictures on Google...

Ok so I'm being a bit funny with the pics, but it really did work a treat
Common sense suggests that you should avoid electrical componentry (connectors, distributor, etc) as much as you can, and that you should avoid letting water pool in (for example) plug holes... and that you should probably take the car for a bit of a drive not long after to blow/cook off any water that may be sitting about. Note that I didn't drive mine because it was unregistered, but otherwise I would've
