actually, the keyway on the crank is only there to locate the harmonic balancer, not to handle any stress. If you do not have sufficient torque on the balancer bolt, the balancer itself can rotate slightly and slam against the keyway, eventually breaking it.

Its a big bolt, and should handle 100lb/ft no worries. If you broke it, then either your torque wrench is wrong, or the bolt was fatigued, or had insufficient lubrication on the threads.
