shift rods are the rods that are attached to the shift forks. there are three of them in a K series box. i've never played with a toploader

and the bellhousing seperates from the box...? so i can use the KE70 box on the KE55 bellhousing? or can i use the KE70 bellhousing with the KE70 box? i assume i'd have to use the KE70 b'housing for the hole for the clutch cable.

nope. bellhousing is integral with the main case. the only bit that unbolts is the extension housing.
the KE70 has shifter at rear of ext h, whereas KE55 is middle. the 4 speed shift rods are different but the 5 speed shift rods are same. they are both same total length.

is it just the mount that's different or the whole gearbox x-member? just for clarification, the "spigot" bearing is the "thrust" bearing for the clutch yeah?

whole cross-member is different, but specifically the way the KE70 box attaches to the cross-member is totally different than KE55. have a look at a wreckers and you'll see what i mean.
ahhh no.. spigot bearing is the bearing in the flywheel for the input shaft.
