If you have a 1.6 litre car, the 2 litre ford will be nearly as much arseing about to fit as the 4age. If you have a 2 litre car, more things will have to be modded to make the 4age fit (exhaust, fuel lines are on opposite sides, don't really want the fuel lines running near the exhaust hey...).
I love escorts, hell, I own one, but I am a firm advocate that 2lt escort motors suck in a big way. Heavy, don't rev, weak internals (rods etc) are just some of the downsides. Coupled with the fact that with a fair amount of extra weight in the nose, 2 litre powered mk2 vans don't handle with anything like the balance of a 1.6 version. A 4age with some breathing mods would more than likely make more grunt and be far easier to live with than a 2 litre with a cam, webers, high comp etc that you would need to get the same power.Plus its lighter and far more compact.
And, don't kid yourself that the 2 litre will have anything like cheap or easy horsepower gains,because with old ford 4s be prepared to just open your wallet and also bend over when it comes time to buy performance bits. I'd avoid using the 2 litre escy motor, at least in the van (van engine bay needs the motor to be further forward than the sedan one, thus ruining the good weight distribution of the escort)..And a cosworth will cost more for the motor than for the whole 4age conversion, with most of the pinto's inherent weaknesses still there, and, well , just try and find a mondeo engine, then convert it to rwd...sump, pickup,dizzy drive (like a 20v, off the back of the head) manifold etc will all need modding, as well as a custom bellhousing.....
