nobody ever heard of a dictionary?
(from dictionary.cambridge.org - tho being australian, we should defer to the macquarie)

dent

a small hollow mark in the surface of something, caused by pressure or being hit:

make/put a dent in
to reduce an amount of money:

........ so they mean the same thing?
