I have spent all my uni life on Austudy etc and have got a spreadsheet set up where I can see how the hours I work effect my payments- you can optimise it and see what the best amount to work is so that you don't go working an extra 10 hours and at the end of the day have your payments reduced so you are really working for 30c an hour or something stupid like that. I am pretty lucky, my sister is a systems analyst for C.Link so she helps me to find the necessary info rather than having to wait on hold for hours to talk to your average daft counter worker. my advice as well is for student engineers to try to get Vac work over the summer for a mining company. You will definitely be able to make the threshold for independence then. As for Dole Bludgers I had some skatey mates who wanted to start their own clothing label with cash from the dole called centerlinc so skaters and surfers etc could say that they were sponsored and just had to sell their autograph each f/night to get paid.
