Hi,

Clean your capstans (the thin metal spindles) and the rubber drive wheel. Use metho and, if you haven't cleaned it before, you'll need a few cotton buds to get all the shit off.

Also, clean the heads while you're at it - but use clean cotton buds for that - also with metho on them. Wait a few mins after you clean before you put a tape in, to let the metho evapourate.

I'm assuming that you've tried a few different cassettes and it does the same to all of them?

The tension sensor can be one of a few types, depending upon the deck. It could be detected by load - that is, the motor amps (milliamps) rises to signify the tape is at the end and the motor is stalling - or, it can be a sensor that detects the rollers have stopped - or, it can be a little tab thing that pushes in the tape and when the tape is under tension it pushes the tab out.

I'd hazard a guess it's the last one - especially if it's an older deck. Check to see if there's a small tab in there and see if it's bent, which can happen if the tape is pushed into the deck hard and fast.

Naturally, this ain't easy to do with the deck in-situ and a tape being put in 'cos your view gets severely blocked. Worse case, pull it out, remove the lid and have a gander. Better still, invest in a new deck. It's a good excuse to get a CD unit. Smile
