There's arguments for and against a receiver groove. Some say its better to have the groove for the copper to 'bulge' into from the ring pressing on the other side (to help sealing), others will argue that the block & head expand at different rates (being cast iron vs aluminium) which can cause dramas with the alignment of the receiver groove. Unfortunately I can't give a definative answer as I have not tried both ways first hand
Speak to a few engine builders in your area, i'm sure they'll each have a story to tell as to which is best.
I personally like the idea of a TRD/HKS etc multi-layer metal gasket and/or headstuds rather than copper gaskets.
