Air to fuel ratio

My freind has a fj20 turbo in his datsun and he is wondering how the air to fuel ration sensor works. Does it have to run through the computer or go straigh to the gauge , Standard computer.
Is the sensor an oxygen sensor or does it read the temp and convert it to the ratio
