Hi,
At least three excellent points were raised in this topic, in regards to this type of accident, and the sorry aftermath.
1 - Call the cops, even if it's a bugger-all scratch. It will go on a cops report and that can be used later for any further proceedings
2 - Tell your insurance company. If it's not your fault, then your 3rd party insurance will handle it and they have the law and more clout to get a resolution. It becomes their problem then.
3 - Cheap digi cameras are not expensive and provide adequate photographic evidence. Leave one in the glove box and take pics straight away. Take pics from different angles and include stop/give-way signs, etc to prove how the accident occurred.
Extra things you should do
A - Take the rego and license number of the other party. If they refuse to give details, make sure to inform the cops and insurance company of this.
B - Make a note of the time, road conditions and colour and make/model of the other vehicle.
C - Make sure you have a small pad and pencil in the glovebox also to take these notes.
D - Write the above points in your pad so you can remember what to do in case you're in a bingle 'cos, as mentioned, at the time you're still a bit shaken up and maybe forget something.
