Use a whole bottle (2L) of turps to clean it, half to get the bulk of the dirt out & other half for a good rinse.
When you go to re-oil it, I find the oil way too thick, & once your engine bay heats up all the excess oil drips down to the bottom of your filter & into your engine bay.
Next time I do mine I'm gonna mix up a bottle of about 2:1 turps to oil that I can pour out into a bowl, soak the filter in & give it a good wring out, then pour it all back into the bottle for next time.
It'd prolly be a good idea to let the filter sit outside for a while for the turps to evaporate a bit though.....
When I picked up my filter from uni-filter in Hornsby, I watched them oil it & they dunked it in a bucket & gave it a good squeeze, & it definitley wasn't straight filter fix oil. It looked & sounded like a very diluted mix.
