dodgy valve seals/faces?
... not evident when the plug is out, but once in- probably obvious effective at lowering compression once plug reinserted.
do a wet/dry comp test on that cyl followed by a leak down - and if you have the time/money get a boroscope (spelling?) to look at the bores for scoring (dud rings).
no noises would probably indicate that at least the crank is alright.
btw - is there excessive crankcase pressure (measure with hand over oil filler hole - pressure should fluctuate from mild vacuum to slight pressure at idle)?
oil pressure would remain good even if a valve broke off - droap in pressure would indicate problems with bearings etc...
