The Mk2 cruise control runs off the speedo (the electronics are actually integrated into the instrument panel), which in turn runs off a conventional mechanical speedo cable. Mk2 transmissions don't have an electronic speed sensor like the Mk3's.

My black Mk2 was a 5-speed that had been converted from an auto, and the cruise didn't work in that either. I could never figure out why, because everything was hooked up correctly.
