igniter.
takes the input (such as hall effect or VR) and either conditions signal to fire the transistor that grounds the coil.

or conditions signal to send to ECU which sends back and that signal then fires the transistor that grounds the coil.

igniters 'usually' (perhaps?) control the dwell. timing is either controlled by the dizzy, or the ECU.
