There are a few different categories, and if you're lucky you should be able to declare your purchase as a duty free item. It seems pretty random whether they get you to figure out duty on your own or if they put it on themselves, but if you get charged duty, double-check on the site to make sure they're not gouging you. Either way you pay GST, which sucks, but what can you do? Get your stuff declared as under a grand in value? But then you can't get insurance if it's lost/damaged in the mail.
