It takes me on average 10 minutes to bring my desktop back to the state where I can start doing work again.
Either there's something wrong with your PC or you run a shiteload of stuff! It takes me no more than 3 minutes to be fully functional after booting my PC.
Quote:

Add to that the fact that sometimes Windoze just fucks up and a developer spends 2 hours trying to look in the team's code to see what's going on, and the solution is to reboot the OS...

I've never had that happen to me... not on XP that's for sure!
Quote:

Sure, for home use it may be fine. Who cares if it's buggy and unreliable.
But as a development platform, it's not stable enough and is slow compared to its main competitor.

Apparently it's only "buggy and unreliable" for you Nark. Smile

As for a development platform, I work in an office with 20 developers, all using VS.NET 2003 on XP Professional, and we're currently putting the finishing touches on the largest .NET rollout undertaken in this country. We give our PC's more of a hammering than just about anyone with the amount of crap we have to run, but none of us have to reboot on a regular basis... definitely not once a day! My PC has been up and running all week and shows no sign of any problems. If your experience is different to this there's obviously something wrong, but you're taking the easy way out and "blaming Microsoft". The problem with that approach is you'll never find a solution to your actual problem!

Windoze servers can stay up for extended periods of time because they're only performing one task.

What an absolute load of tripe. Have you ever managed a room full of Windows servers in a large production environment? I have, and very few of the boxes I managed performed a single task (what a waste that would be!), and many were at constant >80% load. None required reboots because of OS problems - if they did there would be many many fingers pointing at me and asking difficult questions!
Quote:

Windoze on a server is a stupid idea. You get much better performance from the same hardware running Unix.

Another unfounded generalisation. Even in the cases where unix does perform better (and it is better at some stuff) the performance differences are small. More important to many IT operations is the (relative) ease of management offered by Windows - and that's its biggest strength. If the Windows solution is slightly slower than the unix solution, purchasing faster hardware is cheap - but paying the ongoing costs of a support team for the unix solution is FAR from cheap.
