Either there's something wrong with your PC or you run a shiteload of stuff! It takes me no more than 3 minutes to be fully functional after booting my PC.

I run a shitload of things. Development IDEs, browsers with links to APIs, management consoles, local servers, lots of shit.

Norbie wrote on Fri, 08 October 2004 08:15

Apparently it's only "buggy and unreliable" for you Nark. Smile

And the rest of the people who have posted their problems on this thread.
It is [b]not[\b] a reliable OS because Micro$haft's QA is virtually non-existant.

As for a development platform, I work in an office with 20 developers, all using VS.NET 2003 on XP Professional, and we're currently putting the finishing touches on the largest .NET rollout undertaken in this country. We give our PC's more of a hammering than just about anyone with the amount of crap we have to run, but none of us have to reboot on a regular basis... definitely not once a day! My PC has been up and running all week and shows no sign of any problems. If your experience is different to this there's obviously something wrong, but you're taking the easy way out and "blaming Microsoft". The problem with that approach is you'll never find a solution to your actual problem!

Funny how this problem has occurred in the last three projects that I've worked in (at three different companies).
BTW, I never said anyone had to reboot once a day.
By a week though, my system's performance has decreased enough for me to warrant a reboot. This is a significant problem which should not occur in a properly memory managed OS.

What an absolute load of tripe. Have you ever managed a room full of Windows servers in a large production environment? I have, and very few of the boxes I managed performed a single task (what a waste that would be!), and many were at constant >80% load. None required reboots because of OS problems - if they did there would be many many fingers pointing at me and asking difficult questions!

I don't think that's an industry norm for Windoze boxes.
Granted, the typical Windoze admin doesn't even need to know how to type let alone keep a system humming properly...

Quote:

Windoze on a server is a stupid idea. You get much better performance from the same hardware running Unix.

Another unfounded generalisation. Even in the cases where unix does perform better (and it is better at some stuff) the performance differences are small. More important to many IT operations is the (relative) ease of management offered by Windows - and that's its biggest strength. If the Windows solution is slightly slower than the unix solution, purchasing faster hardware is cheap - but paying the ongoing costs of a support team for the unix solution is FAR from cheap.

The performance differences aren't small. The schedulers and memory managers in Unices are way ahead of what can be found in Windows. Multitasking > task switching
And how often do the Windows systems need to have patches applied compared to a Unix system? Kinda makes up for the expense of Unix admins methinks!
Plus, as I stated earlier, the vast majority of Windows admins know shit (which greatly contributes to Windows's reputation as being unreliable).

Nark, I don't know where you fit in. Maybe number 7?

I think #4 is close, except that I'd be banging my head against the wall... Razz
