Diff whine

I just got a locked T-series center as an interim while I save up for a proper LSD, and it's rather loud - like a whirring loud... It's okay up to about 30k's, at 60 I can't hear my engine or exhaust anymore, and at 100 I can't hear myself even if I shout...
I'm guessing this means the diff is rather stuffed. It doesn't really sound like crunchy bearings, it's more like a 747 sort of whine... Oh yeah, and only on acceleration. On coast it's relatively quiet... I've been told that locked diffs whine, but surely they aren't meant to make this much noise?
What will happen if I keep driving on it? Will it just wear out really quickly? Or will it self destruct and blow everything to bits?
