If you are serious into 4WD then id go water to air. Ive just fitted a Liberty RS intercooler to my '04 TD Navara. Ive put a 12" fan on my water cooler, so when you are hacking around dunes at high RPM and low speed there is still plenty of air going through it. Think how well a top mount unit would work in the dunes, heat radiating up to it, no air circulation past = not vey good.
Price indication for my system:
Liberty Water to Air intercooler = $100
Liberty water cooler (radiator) = $100
Flojet circulation pump = $165
12" Thermo = $90
Hobbs switch = $10
Hoses, relays, clamps, fuses, switches etc. $100
Total = $565
Pretty good value, probably spent a total of 20 hours of my time on it though modifying the cooler, making brackets, wiring (yuk) etc.
