I agree that imports are always going to be more difficult to source parts for, but there are imports like Skylines and Silvias, and then there are more obscure imports. The GT4, and particularly the 165 falls into this category. To the person who asked, no the dizzy for the 165 is not interchangable between the MR2/185/205. That was my first question too.
Don't quote me on this but in the year or so i have owned my car, what i have read and what i have experienced leads me to believe that quite a few bits on the 165 are unique to it and ONLY it. Bearing in mind the thing was designed basically from scratch for competition. Conversely the 185 and 205 are basically interchangable part for part. It shares more than just the basic underpinnings with the 185 and 205, but little differences like injectors (165 has side feed not top feed) heatshields, dizzy's, turbo angles, and oil filter location just for starters make transplants a bit of a hassle.
I've got a CT20B turbo im waiting to put on and just to do that i had to get a twin entry 185 manifold, and i'll have to relocate the oil filter and re-shape the dipstick. While its not much work, it seems a bit disproportionate given they're just a different version of the same car. I have to say though that on the whole, most of the everyday bits are interchangable.
FWDboyThe best advice i could give you is this: make www.alltrac.net your friend. Its an absolute wealth of info and the people there are truly enthusiastic and genuine. If i post a question its usually answered within an hour!
Mods wise, what is going to make the biggest difference is a FULL 3" exhaust. Aussie exhausts in QLD are your best bet. Then de-restrict your induction, fit a metal head gasket, and wind your boost up (making sure you have enough fuel-pump/regulator/7MGTE TOP FEED injectors). After that, once you can keep the charge cool, the pistons are the weakest point in the engine and they'e pretty damn durable by all accounts!
Im sure you have your own plans but this route is generally accepted as being the basis of serious performance. Before you are able to get the best from that though, the ignition is going to need looking at, which is where i am now.
BTW, looking at the condition of your car, it seems a damn shame to strip the thing for racing. You have a genuine peice of rally history. I don't plan on selling mine mainly because in the scheme of things they don't cost jack shit, so any money i'd get back for it, i would rather forego and keep the thing in pristine nick till it becomes truly collectable.
Fuck, huge post. Still at work. Time to go home!
PPS: One more thing, the gear stick isn't that big, its the wack gearknob its got on it. The stock one looks fine on every GT4/All-Trac i have ever seen
