you need, at minimum, a dual circuit master cylinder, so that if one circuit fails, the car still stops.
if you don't want/ can't have a booster, look to getting a VH40 or VH44 remote booster first..
brakes without booster are ok if discs are large enough, or if MC is small enough.. ie more pedal travel gives you more leverage = easier to push...
you want them to be firm, but not be an effort to stop car each time...
fwiw, KE1x corollas never had boosters, but they are a very light car too.
i'd be talking to an engineer about it, since major brake modifications need to be certified... perhaps...
