If you spend a bit of time with the search facility, you'll find the answers to all your questions and more... this stuff really has been covered a lot around here!
Since I'm in a good mood though, here it is in a nutshell:
- 1G is generally considered the bast bang for your buck.
- Yes they are quite cheap for what you get.
- 12 second pass shouldn't be a problem with the usual mods (exhaust/cooler/boost)
- Turbos definitely are fragile if you push the boost too far. Be sensible and they're fine though.
- Getting a 4A to do a 12 is really pushing it. You could do it of course but you'd have to spend a fair bit of money; for starters you'd have to ditch the blower and turbocharge it.
- 1JZ has been done and it can be made street-legal, but the 1JZ is big and heavy so goodbye chassis balance. It's also lots more work than a 1G conversion.
- Gearbox depends what engine you're using. W58 (Supra 5-speed) is the most likely option though.
- I won't even get started on brake conversions, there are approximately 23.8 quadzillion threads on this topic. Search!
