Before replacing it - it might be worthwile taking it to a steering specialist and getting them to flush the fluid and put a treatment through it.
I did this when I bought my R31 skyline (same deal, noisy/grinding pump) but it was perfect after the treatment was put through it and and fresh fluid was flushed through it.
It's pretty easy to do it yourself - even if you are only slightly mechanically inclined.
