Damn funny you should say exactly this as I have an external fuel pump for my 1G-GZE in my RA23. It was earthed inside the cabin and then that failed. So I ran a twin thick earth cable from an old Corolla battery earth from the fuel pump to one of its chassis mounting bolts and also across to a bolt that runs into the chassis rail. Worked fine for 3 mins and then gradually the fuel pump slowed down to a complete stop. Now I have a dicky little 2mm wire running from the pump underneath the chassis all the way back to the battery - and of course - it works fine.......<sigh>....
