If you want to know what the difference between the two cars are do a bit of a search around and you'll find a fair bit of inside info. Go to www.alltrac.net as well as they are GT4 fanatics and combined there's probably more knowledge on there than the group of engineers who made the '165s.
The 87 and onwards (although some 86 models) all have a viscous centre diff, however both front and rear diffs are open (remember there's three of them)! To quickly summarise, I've found the viscous centre to be something of a handful on gravel, as it loads up kind of strangely, something I'm still getting used to! With the right provocation it works great, but don't expect to just plant your foot and get big slides going, cause the only thing you'll do is understeer. Left foot braking is also a bit on and off, as the ABS system is a PITA!
The 86 model has a simple locking device to engage four wheel drive, but it's not for use on surfaces like dry tarmac so you'll be stuck with FWD except when it's raining heavily or if you take if off the road and onto the dirt Or onto a dirt road!
As for the price of an ST162, be careful! Some cheap ones are good, some aren't so good. Same with the expensive ones. Even though they still look fairly up to date and don't LOOK old, some of them are really worn out and tired so see if you can get info on the history of the car!
