Hi mate. To answer your question about the A-340, they are quite capable of dealing with a decent motor if you look after them. By that I mean don't flatten your foot and have it jump back to 1st at max boost etc (common sense really), fit a massive trans cooler, have it checked out and clutches replaced if needed etc. The thing to know about the a340 (and the later boxes too(they are all pretty much the same mechanically, but later autos tend to have the line pressure cable replaced by a variable solenoid that is computer controlled) is that second gear is the one to watch. With only 4 clutches it will be the first one to go. Keep in mind however, that taken care of they will tolerate 400-450 hp(I ran around 450 through mine and it survived fine). An uprated valve body with the line pressure increased to 200 psi also helps. With second modified to take 7 clutches the box becomes a relatively formidable unit. Using a different friction material can make it even tougher-but then, as with all boxes-broken input shafts etc can start to happen (talking VERY big power though).

If you're getting an import motor-try to grab one with the auto attached and use it as it will be newer and (probably) in better nick than the one you have. If you are going to use the factory ECU and trans computer-no worries, otherwise, if an aftermarket ECU you can also make the box a full manual shift eliminating the need to try and hook up the trans computer. (if going the full manual route get an auto with a line pressure cable-not solenoid setup)

The new box will be easy to fit up to the car-and may even use the same tailshaft (a cressida/1JZ person should be able to answer that one)

Take it easy
Sean
