I've heard rumours from multiple sources now that some of the clubman/sport1300 guys used to run them well past 10000rpm, though with short engine lifetimes!
To do this I'd assume that they used roller rockers (Datsun A12 items might possibly fit with few mods - the heads are *very* similar to K items), bigger valves with thinner (6mm ish) stems as specified by the 3K TOSCO manual, hard-as-my-wang valve springs, stronger bolts/studs everywhere, ridiculous cams, and some big carbs. Aforementioned TOSCO manual says to use a pair of DHLA45 sidedrafts. QUITE big.
Stewie's 4K makes power well beyond 8000rpm. His cam specs are in the oldcorollas faq
I'm not planning to regularly run my warm 3K past 7500, at least not for a while. Will see how it goes with the new twins
