when i got my engine all back together when i first started it the manifold seal was leaking  but if that was the problem i don't see why it would come and go, i say get a fuel treatment bottle put it in the tank and let it clean out your carby as you drive  fixed the problem with my engine once when it started to surge.
also check your air filter,
might be time for new plugs,?
a list of causes could go on and on so just check a few first and if that doesn't fix it then start looking at other possible causes
