18rgeu camshaft timing confusion Sun, 21 November 2004 12:03 Go to previous message
well after being inspired by people100 and his 18rgeu turbo engine, a small note in that thread got me thinking that the reason my car is so frigging hard to start is because the cam timing is out.
i pulled the rocker cover off and the pin for the intake was in the left most hole (looking at the engine from the front of the car), while the pin for the exhaust is in the second hole from the left.
at top dead centre on the crank, when rotated in a clockwise direction, both cams sat at roughly 11:58 if i was to read it like a clock.
the green book said to advance the timing put the pin in the next hole to the left, to retard it, put it in the next hole to the right.
now here is where i am confused. I had nothing to loose so i set both pins to the third hole from the left and this in fact seemed to pull them up to 12:00.
according to the book i retarded the timing, but the cams advanced further around so i don't understand the logic in that.
I am sure it is simple and someone should be able to tell me pretty simply, prefferably without abuse or a hint of mocking. but why is it that when i retard the timing (according to the book), the cams are rotated further around?

on another note, my car now starts first time (an experience i have never had since getting the car 2 years ago Very Happy ) but the idle is a little sporadic when cold, is there like a fast idle mechanism on the 18rgeu for cold starts?
